Why is there a US military base in Germany?
The US military presence in Germany is a legacy of the post-WWII Allied occupation, which lasted from 1945 to 1955. It allowed eight NATO members, including the US, to have a permanent military presence in Germany. The treaty still regulates the terms and conditions of the NATO troops stationed in Germany today.
How long are you stationed at a base in the Air Force?
The Air Force is supportive of Airmen families, with on-base housing, shopping, schools, parks, gyms and more. Assignments are 3–5 years in length. While the needs of the Air Force mission determine assignment, an Airman’s desired location is also a factor.
Do you get to choose your base in the Air Force?
To be assigned to a base, there must be a need for your specialty at that base. At the same time, your preferred locations are considered during the assignment process. Whenever possible, we try to match an Air Force need with your assignment preferences.
Can parents live with you on base?
The military requires you to provide adequate support (which includes housing) to your dependents. However, unless your dependents move to your duty location, you are not authorized to reside in on-base family housing, because the rules say to qualify, your dependents must be living with you.
Is it better to live on or off base?
In others it will pay for a one bedroom condo, but base can give you a three bedroom home. It may sound like a no-brainer, but if you are going to get less house off base for the same amount you would forfeit for a large place on base, living on base is going to be cheaper.
